Q: I am a deferred racer. It says Phase 1 registration is from February 8 – 28. Do I have to complete my registration by February 28?

A: Registration for deferred racers will open at 8:00 p.m. AKT on February 8, 2021. We recommend you complete your registration by 11:59 p.m. AKT on February 28, 2021. You may still use your deferral claim after February 28; however, registration to the general public opens on March 1 at 8:00 p.m. AKT. We expect there will be limited availability for the live and hybrid events once it is open to the general public. Visit the 2021 registration page for more information.

Q: I deferred from the 2020 race and thought I was registered for 2021 already. Do I need to register again? And, do I need to pay?

A: All racers who deferred their 2020 event registration to 2021 have no registration fees but will still be required to select their event choice and complete a 2021 registration between February 8 – 28, 2021.

Registrations can be completed after February 28 but registration opens to the general public on March 1. We recommend completing your registration early as we expect there will be limited availability for the live and hybrid events. Visit the 2021 registration page for more information.

Q: What is this email from RunSignUp with 1-day license numbers that some people received on February 6, 2021? I did not receive it.

A: Most deferred registrants were sent an email from RunSignUp on February 6, 2021 containing their USAT one-day license number that they paid for when registering for the 2020 event. Racers who had a 1-day license (versus an annual membership – see below) must use this number during the registration process or you will be forced to pay for it a second time in order to complete your registration.

  • If you are already a USAT member (and were at the time of your 2020 registration) you would not have received a 1-day license email. All you have to do is enter your USAT membership number in the USAT membership number location during the registration process.
  • If you have a child that also registered for the event you would not receive a one-day license for them as well. They too would have their own membership and you would use their number.
  • If you do not know your member numbers you can try to retrieve those on the USAT website or you can email us at info@goldnuggettriathlon.com. Please give us ample time to answer your emails as we are not “on” 24/7, but will respond as quickly as possible.
Q: I purchased a lane bid, what are my options for 2021?

A: If you purchased a lane bid you have several options:

  1. If not already registered for the 2021 in-person live event you can transfer to that event (space permitting) and those with lane bids will be seeded directly behind the top 50 racers, thus giving you an early start time (note: all swimmers will still swim in the snake-swim format).
  2. Choose not to use your lane bid and donate it to the GNT 2021 charity – the Clare House (you will be assigned a bib and start time as a general racer).
  3. Receive a lane bid refund (you will be assigned a bib and start time as a general racer).

For choices 2 and 3 above you must email info@goldnuggettriathlon.com to initiate the donation or request the refund.

Q: How will the 400 racers for the live event be selected?

A: Registration for all events is first-come, first-serve. Deferred racers have the priority registration option from February 8 – 28, 2021, but even with that, the registration for the live event is limited to the first 400 who sign up. If the 400 slots are not filled by deferred racers, any available spots will be open for registration to the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis on March 1, 2021.

Q: I am not interested in any of the events offered in 2021 or just can’t make the event this year. Can I defer my registration again and race in 2022? Or, can I get a refund?

A: 2020 racers were given an option to refund last year or defer to the 2021 event. There are no refunds or additional deferral options available.

We are thrilled to be able to press forward with a series of events this year. In the spirit of the GNT and recognizing that we are still operating in unusual times the race directors and board have worked hard to provide this selection of events including a live in-person event (as we had hoped to when we pushed last year’s registrations to 2021), to a hybrid group of events and all virtual event options. All 2021 racer options include a great swag package and the full support of the GNT community in whichever event they choose.

There are no refunds or additional deferral options available. We know this may be disappointing but we hope that racers seeking a refund or deferral to a future year understand that planning and developing an athletic event that ensures adequate support and supplies for participants is difficult. We rely on the registration information for an accurate participant count. Because this is vital to the success of our events, there are no additional refund or deferral opportunities being offered.

See the cancellations, refunds and transfers page for more information.

Q: I missed sign up for the race last year. Am I able register for it this year? How can I register? Do I need to sign up for the waitlist again?

A: Great news! Registration for new racers will open on March 1, 2021.

Registration will open for new race registrations at 8:00 p.m. AKT on March 1, 2021. Event choices may be limited pending the number of registrations completed by deferred racers.

Of course, everyone can register for the virtual events as there is no cap on this event type, giving everyone, anywhere in the U.S. the option to participate in the largest all-women’s triathlon in the country – the Gold Nugget Triathlon! Invite your family and friends from anywhere in the U.S. to participate in the 2021 GNT with you this year! Direct your friends and family outside of Alaska to the 2021 virtual race page for more information.

Q: Will there be a waitlist for the in-person or hybrid event if they fill up?

A: The live event is full to the 400 racer maximum and a waitlist is open for deferred racers.

During the phase 1 registration period from February 8 – 28, 2021 the waitlist option is only available to deferred racers from 2020.

We recommend that deferred racers who waitlist for the live event should still register for an alternate event (hybrid or virtual). More details on the waitlist and the process to clear names from the waitlist will be made available before the close of phase 1 registration on February 28.

Q: Can I register for both the live event and the virtual event?

A: We are currently only allowing deferred racers to choose one event type. We will evaluate any changes to that policy after the completion of the deferred registration period on February 28.

Q: Do seeded/elite racers have guaranteed entry into the live in-person event?

A: No. All event selection is on a first-come, first-serve basis; no racers are given any preference when registering. The seeded assignments for the live in-person event will be made from those racers successfully registered for that event.

Q: If the live in-person event fills up, will you consider opening a second full live event on another day?

A: We will not be adding any additional events in 2021. We have worked with our permitting and venue partners and other key individuals involved with the event to provide five race options this year and enough options with one or more in-person components to accommodate all deferred racers. We simply cannot any additional events and without diminishing the experiences for racers in all the currently planned 2020 GNT events.

Q: For the live in-person event, will we be able to sign up for a swim time and swim around the same time as someone else?

There is not option during registration to select start times or coordinate with family or people in your bubble. We will provide more details on bib assignments and start/on-deck times in March.

Q: For all events, where will we pick-up our shirts/swag?

A: Shirts/swag will be distributed at pre-race bib/packet pick-ups or shipped to those who select the shipping option during registration.

Q: Do we have to a mask while participating in the live swims, live runs or the live in-person event?

A:  Masks are required at all GNT hosted venues when not racing. We recommend racers bring several of their own disposable masks. There will be disposable masks available at several locations at the venue(s).

  • Racers will be required to wear masks at all times except when actively racing.
    • Live-run (hybrid events):
      • There will be a receptacle to toss masks after you cross the start line, or you can just take your mask off and carry it with you.
      • Masks will be required at the completion of your race upon leaving the finish corral.
    • Live swims (hybrid events):
      • You will be required to wear your mask until entering the pool and then putting mask back on upon completion of your swim.
    • Live in-person event:
      • There will be a receptacle in the pool to toss masks just before entering the pool to being your swim.
      • Masks are not required wile racing so there is no need to put a mask on after the swim or for the bike or run.
      • Masks will be required at the completion of your race upon leaving the finish corral.
    • Volunteers and other partners at the event will be required to wear masks at all times.
Q: Will there be spectators allowed at any of the in-person events?

There will be no spectators permitted at any 2021 in-person GNT events. We need of many volunteers, interested people can sign up to volunteer and will be able to catch some portion of the race while volunteering. Volunteer sign-ups will open in mid-March. See the volunteer page for more information.

Q: Will there be other swimmers in the lane (both hybrid and live in-person events)?

A: Yes. For the hosted swims that are part of the hybrid events the lanes will be “split” with two swimmers per lane with each swimmer assigned one side of the lane.

In the live in-person event there will be other swimmer(s) in a lane as you “snake” up and down each lane. With the 30-45 second spacing of each start for the snake swim, we do not anticipate there will be more than two to three swimmers in a single lane at one time.

Q: Will we be able to use locker rooms at the hybrid and in-person event?

A: The locker room availability varies by event:

  • Live in-person event on May 16 at Chugiak High School: the locker rooms will be available for racers to use. Social distancing and face mask use is required.
  • Live run on May 15 at Chugiak High School: there will be no access to the locker rooms or any indoor areas of the school.
  • Hosted Swim for the Hybrid 1 Options May 7 – 14:
    • The Alaska Clubs: locker rooms will be available for use. All Alaska Club safety measures must be adhered to.
    • Bartlett High School: there will be access to locker rooms at the Bartlett HS swims; however, showers are not currently available for use. Social distancing and face mask use is required.
Q: Are live in-person racers able to join the hybrid live run on May 15 with the others to practice the run course?

A: No. Only registered racers for each event (hybrid swims, hybrid live run, live in-person event) are permitted to attend each specific event. All racers must adhere to this as it is an important part of our COVID mitigation and safety plan. The registration numbers and start times for all events are designed completely around this plan and we are relying on racers and their friends and family to abide by requirement. Like you, we know it is a bummer, but are making the best of it this year and look forward to getting back to a traditional race format next year.

Q: Will the 2020 GNT virtual and hybrid events be part of the triple patch program?

We have reached out to the trial patch program manager and will post an answer to this question soon.
